When Jesus Stopped

Life often feels like it moves at a relentless pace. Schedules are full, demands are constant, and it can seem as though no one notices the needs quietly carried by those around us. That was the world Bartimaeus knew as he sat beside the road outside Jericho.

When Jesus passed by, Bartimaeus cried out, "Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me." The crowd tried to silence him, but he refused to stop calling. Then one of the most beautiful statements in Scripture appears: "Jesus stood still."

This week's message focused on that simple but powerful truth. Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem, where the cross awaited Him, yet He stopped for one overlooked man. He was never too busy to hear a sincere cry of faith.

We also considered that Jesus desired more than to restore Bartimaeus's sight. He called him closer, invited him into a personal encounter, and after receiving his miracle, Bartimaeus "followed Jesus in the way." The greatest work Christ accomplished that day was not simply opening blind eyes—it was making a disciple.

That same invitation still stands today. Christ hears those who call upon Him. He is not indifferent to our burdens, our failures, or our needs. He still stops for people who seek Him in faith, and He still calls us to leave behind whatever keeps us from following Him wholeheartedly.

Our prayer is that we would never allow the noise of the crowd or the distractions of life to keep us from calling on Christ. And when He calls us, may we respond without hesitation and follow Him faithfully in the way.
